Stray Cat : Eradication Is the Only Solution?

   Recently, hating stray cats related crimes, such as killing the stray cats or assaulting cat moms, are increasing. Stray cats are commonly known cause problems that they disarrange the street, attack people, spread the diseases to humans. Also most people think the act of cat moms that feed the stray cats would lead to increased the number of stray cats.
   Do stray cats and cat moms really cause this problems on the human communities? Should we eradicate stray cats and restrain cat moms activity? In my opinion, eradication of stray cats and restraint of cat moms activity are not the right solutions. First of all, it is a misconception that stray cats cause a lot of problems in human communities. Actually, they are not aggressive to humans. Most stray cats are instinctively cautious about people and afraid of people. Therefore, if you don't approach or pose a threat to them, that does not usually happen. The probability that they carry the disease to people is very low. [1] Ackerman, who is an authority at the UCLA School of Public Health, said that the risk of catching an intestinal parasite like Cryptosporidium and Giardia from cats has been vastly over-hyped. Molecular studies show that these parasites are usually species specific—meaning that the type that infects cats does not infect humans—and some studies even suggest that cats and other animals are more likely to catch these parasites from humans than vice-versa. They rather have a good influence to public health, because they catch mice which are carriers of infectious diseases. [2] According to the result of the study from the Moscow Institute of Ecology and Evolution, urine of cats contain chemicals that control the behavior of the mice. In addition, pregnant rats tend abortion or giving birth to fewer cubs when exposed to cat urine. Second, cat moms behavior does not cause stray cats's problems and the increase in stray cats's population. If they are able to get food stably, there is no reason to scavenge through food garbage for something to eat. Also, it is true that the population of street cats growing little by little, but it is less concerned with feeding. The root causes of the increase in their populations are their high reproductive rate and increasing of abandoned cats. Trap-Neuter-Return, commonly referred to as "TNR," is the only method proven to be humane and effective at controlling feral cat population growth. Using this technique, all the feral cats in a colony are trapped, neutered and then returned to their territory where caretakers provide them with regular food and shelter. [3] According to a study conducted by collecting more than 2000 specimens at the University of Florida, TNR can take a effective result that reduction in the stray cats population.
   For these reasons, we must clear up the misunderstandings about stray cats and cat moms, and should find ways that can coexist with them.
